Historical background
The General Organization for Government Printing Offices
dates back to 179 years ago.
Boulaq Printing Press was established in September 1235
A.H. - 1820 A.D. and was inaugurated officially in 1821
by El-Wali Mohamed Ali Pasha. It printed books &
military publications for the Army.
Later it undertook some developments, whereas it started
printing literary, scientific & educational books.
In October 1862 A.D., Khedive Saeed Pasha granted the
printing press to Abdu Al-Rahman Bek Roshdy as a
present. Later, Khedive Ismaeel bought the printing
press & affiliated it to the "Sania Possessions".
In the era of Khedive Tawfiq, and precisely on
20/06/1880, the
printing press was reverted to the state.
On 13th August 1956, former President Gamal Abdel Nasser
issued the decree no. 312 for 1956 to form the General
Organization for Government Printing Offices and it was
affiliated to the Ministry of Industry. The board of
directors held its first meeting at the beginning of
September 1956 A.D. under the leadership of Dr. Aziz
Sidqi, the Minister of Industry.
Since that date, the Ministry of Industry took the
decision to construct a new building for the
Organization at Embaba area, on approximately 35,000
square meters, to be able to perform its mission. The
Ministry of Industry supplied it with the most recent of
advanced printing machines. New departments were created
such as:
- Photo Composing Department.
- Scanner Department
- Offset printing.
- Automatic Binding lines.
- Computer Department.
The new building was inaugurated officially in the era
of President Mohamed Anwar El Sadat by the Minister of
Industry Eng. Ibrahim Salem Mohammaden on Saturday, the
28th Jumada Al-Akhera 1393 A.H., the 28th July 1973 A.D.
The Organization was considered one of an economic
character according to the decision # 1039 for the year
1979 issued by the Prime Minister.

Printing Art progression
The Organization performs all printing and binding works

production of scholastic books, notebooks, scrapbooks,
exam answering sheets besides publications & minutes of
The Shura Council, The People's Assembly, The Official
Newspaper (El Gareeda El Rasmia) and The Egyptian

& private business sector companies, banks, The
Legislative Bulletin, passports, identity cards & all
kinds of publication needed for the state administrative
bodies such as standard forms & accounting books that
are used in a standardized form. Those include:
standardized publications & calculating publications.
The Organization used to import letters and other
printing necessities from Italy but Egypt ceased
importing from Europe because of its low quality and
various defects, and assigned prominent figures in
calligraphy, imprint, painting, engineering, and
languages to improve, and renovate the Arabic letters
base.
With the introduction of Mono-tape to the Organization,
it became the sole house in the Middle East that
possesses such an art. The Organization has added this
procedure to save time, effort and cost as well as to
improve precision and speed.
At a later stage, Leno-tape machines were added. The
General Organization for Government Printing Offices
used computer like all other institutions and
organizations.
Sixth: The
Organization's role in the modern scientific revival
- Executing all the various ministries' publication
works.
- Executing all the Ministry of Education's publications
and participating in the education of the nation's
youth.
- Reliance on machinery in printing books instead of
manual work.
- Promoting reading and book acquisition among the
people.
- Publishing books in all fields of modern sciences (was
the first to publish that type of books in Egypt).
- Publishing old Arabic books which are considered rare.
- Publishing books in Arabic, and other eastern
languages such as Persian.
Seventh:
The Organization's effect on the Law Library
The Organization never ceased to converse its message,
instead it decided to support the Law Library and
published the laws written under the state including all
modifications and the adjoining ministerial decisions.
Therefore it provided support to those working in all
fields, by helping them get acquainted with the laws
governing their affairs.
Such law publications and books are available at:
